Fall 2023: New Graduate Student Orientation

The New Graduate Student Orientation will be held on Monday, August 21st, 2023 from 11:00am - 4:00pm in the Osterhout Concert Theater. Departments are reminded that this orientation is required for all new teaching assistants and graduate assistants and highly recommended for all new graduate students. 

Three Minute Thesis Competition

 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition - Registration is Open! 

The Graduate School is excited to host Binghamton University's 4th annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition on Thursday, April 27th from 12:00-1:00pm in the Mandela Room (during Research Days).

The 3MT Competition is open to course-complete (CC) master's and ABD doctoral students from all disciplines and the goal is to present your research to a non-specialist audience in 3 minutes or less (180 seconds!) using only one PowerPoint slide. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finalists ($500, $400 and $300) and a People's Choice winner ($150) who will be selected in real-time by the audience.

Past participants have expressed that the 3MT Competition not only helped them to focus on the most important aspect(s) of their research area, but also provided an opportunity to build their confidence in discussing their own research. Please encourage graduate students who are conducting exciting research to submit the 3MT Competition Registration form by 5:00pm on Monday, March 20th.  Prep sessions with Ellen Tilden will begin the week of March 27th.  

Spring '23 degree completion deadlines

 SPRING 2023 Degree Completion Deadlines

Please note the following hard deadlines for Spring 2023 degree completion:

1) Graduate Application for Degree (GAFD) submission: March 15th* / May 4th

• *NOTE: To be included in the Commencement program, the GAFD must be submitted by March 15th. 

2) Recommended deadline for electronic thesis/dissertation submission: May 4th

3) Final deadline for electronic thesis/dissertation submission: May 11th

4) Recommendation for Award form workflow submission: May 19th

All inquiries regarding the electronic Recommendation for Award form should be directed to the Office of Student Records via degree@binghamton.edu. Please also be sure to let their office know of any students who have submitted a GAFD and will not be graduating this Fall so that they cancel the student's GAFD. 

Departments are expected to review their degree candidates and the status of their Recommendation for Award Form workflow using the canned SAS query, "Graduate Degree Requirements Report." This report also shows missing requirements that may delay degree conferral, such as missing/incomplete grades and lack of continuous registration. SAS access can be requested via submission of the "Request Access to Canned Queries Form" that can be found on the right side of this webpage.

GRD 699

 1. GRD 699: DISSERTATION 

The Graduate School is offering GRD 699 (Dissertation) once again for Spring 2023.  This course is available to all ABD doctoral students (in place of their departmental 699). Students should discuss their interest in GRD 699 with their faculty adviser and if approved, work with their department staff to be enrolled (CRN 33616). 

This one-credit independent study course, taught by Robert Danberg of the Writing Initiative, is designed to assist graduate students in two ways: identify a project goal for the course period and become familiar with writing strategies and habits that have helped academic writers.  The principles explored adapt across disciplines and the course has been taken successfully by writers in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students who take the course are often at different stages -- proposal, prospectus, research, data analysis, drafting chapters, revising chapters, etc.

2022-2023 Graduate Student Excellence Awards - Call for Nominations

The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the 2022-2023 Graduate Student Excellence Awards. The submission deadline for nomination packets is Friday, November 4th at 5:00 p.m. 

Nomination packets must be submitted electronically by the student’s Graduate Director - and in PDF format only - to Nicole Smith (smithn@binghamton.edu). Hard copies and submissions that exceed one PDF file will not be accepted.

Each graduate program may nominate only two graduate students per category, per year.  A student may be nominated for more than one category, but may receive only one award.

There are three award categories: Research, Teaching, and Service & Outreach. In an effort to simplify and process nomination packets more efficiently, please organize your packet in the same order as shown on the appropriate checklist (please see attached). Please be sure to include the appropriate checklist as the first item in your nomination packet.

The Graduate Academic Writing Consultants are here to help any Binghamton graduate student with writing a paper, a conference presentation, a thesis, a dissertation chapter, or any academic writing task. They can help with developing ideas, organizing paragraphs or sections and developing transitions between them, structuring an argument, learning documentation standards, proper citation, proof-reading and copy edits, and grammar. (The consultants will not write content.)

REMINDER: Clark Fellowship Travel and Research Grant

The Clark Fellowship Travel and Research Grant has been revised to now cover travel to conferences, travel for research, and the cost of materials and/or supplies that contribute to the completion of the student's degree. Please find the revised description of the award online here. Spring applications are due by Friday, April 1st (for travel between February 1st - July 31st) and should be submitted electronically as a single PDF file to  graduate@binghamton.edu.   

Spring 2022: Degree Completion Deadlines

• Most important to note is that while students can submit the GAFD (Graduate Application for Degree) up through the last day of Spring classes, the deadline to submit the GAFD and be listed in the Commencement program is Wednesday, March 23rd. Please remind your graduate students of this important deadline.

 REMINDER: Distinguished Dissertation Awards

The deadline for distinguished dissertation nominations is Friday, March 4th. The Distinguished Dissertation Award is for PhD and EdD dissertations defended and submitted to the Graduate School in each calendar year (e.g., 2021). The selection process will occur in the following spring semester (e.g., spring 2022). 

The Distinguished Dissertation Award recognizes original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline. Both methodological and substantive quality are judged. Awards are given each year in 4 broad disciplinary areas: mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering; social sciences; humanities and fine arts; and biological and life sciences. Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

The Graduate School is excited to host Binghamton University's 3rd annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 during Research Days. 

The 3MT is a research-communication competition that was developed by the University of Queensland in 2008 and is currently hosted by more than 900 colleges and universities across 85 countries worldwide. The competition is open to course-complete (CC) master's and ABD doctoral students from all disciplines and the goal is to present their research to a non-specialist audience in 3 minutes or less (180 seconds!) using only one PowerPoint slide. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finalists and a People's Choice winner who will be selected in real-time by the audience.

Please encourage eligible students who are conducting exciting research and interested in participating in this year's 3MT Competition to first obtain their faculty adviser's support and then submit the Competition Registration Form by the Friday, March 4th deadline.  Please forward all questions to Ellen Tilden (etilden@binghamton.edu).

 Application for Add-On Certificate - Reminder

The Office of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions would like to send a friendly reminder about how matriculated students add a program certificate to their record. Students who are currently enrolled in a degree program should complete the Add-On Certificate Application Form and submit it via their my.binghamton.edu portal by the add/drop deadline of the semester in which they plan to graduate.

**Please note, matriculated graduate students should not use our normal online application to apply for an add-on certificate. This action will result in the removal of a student from their degree program. Students should only use our normal online application to apply for a stand alone certificate if they wish to enroll solely in the certificate program, and not earn a graduate degree.

 Blanket Extension of Five-Year Limit for Admission to Candidacy (ABD)

The Graduate Council has approved a blanket extension of the five-year limit for admission to candidacy for doctoral students until Spring 2022. No petitions for extensions of the five-year limit will need to be submitted until the Spring 2022 semester.

Rosa Colecchio Travel Awards

Rosa Colecchio Travel Award for Dissertation Research Enhancement applications are due by Friday, March 26th. Graduate students may apply for the Rosa Colecchio Travel Award for Dissertation Research Enhancement when travel enhances the student's dissertation work in a way that could not be accomplished otherwise. This program is funded through an endowment established through the Binghamton University Foundation by the family of Rosa Romano Colecchio. Details on the application package are here.

• The online Graduate Application for Degree is now accessible to students via the "Student" tab in BU Brain.
• Students who submit the Graduate Application for Degree after March 25, 2021 will not have their name appear in the Commencement program. 

• Thesis/Dissertation Submission: May 21, 2021

• Recommendation for Award of Degree forms: May 28, 2021

• Certificate and Thesis/Dissertation Fees: June 4, 2021

• Survey of Earned Doctorates (for doctoral students only): June 4, 2021

Grad School news

Reminder: Graduate School Orientation for New Students

The Graduate School will be hosting a virtual orientation for new graduate students on Monday, August 24th from 11:00am - 4:00pm. The schedule of events can be found online here. 

While it is strongly recommended for all new graduate students to attend, it is mandatory for all new students who will be funded as Teaching/Graduate Assistants (TA/GA) as there will be sessions hosted by Human Resources (11-11:30am) and the Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) (11:30-12noon). 

Graduate Application for Degree (GAFD) for Summer 2020

The deadline for students to apply to graduate this Summer is TODAY (July 31st). Please encourage students who have not yet applied to graduate to do so by submitting the online Graduate Application for Degree (GAFD). Departments can review their degree candidates by running the 'GAFD - Summer 2020' query in SLATE.  Summer degree completion information and deadlines can be found online here.

The Graduate Student Orientation for all new students will be held online for fall 2020 on Monday, Aug. 24, 2020 from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. While it is strongly recommended that all new graduate students attend this program, it is required for all new Teaching Assistants (TA) and Graduate Assistants (GA). All new graduate students will receive an email invitation to register for the New Graduate Student Online Orientation in July. The Graduate School will be hosting an exciting event this Spring - a Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. The 3MT Competition celebrates the research being performed by graduate students in all disciplines by challenging them to present their research to a non-specialist audience in 3 minutes (180 seconds!) or less using only one PowerPoint slide. Developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, this competition is currently held at 600 colleges and universities across more than 65 countries worldwide. 

All information pertaining to the 3MT Competition, including prizes, eligibility guidelines, presentation rules, and judging criteria, can be found online here. 

Do you know of any students who are in the final stages of their research that would be perfect for this competition? Please encourage them to submit a competition registration form by Thursday, January 30th, 2020.

Graduate School Travel Grant

Graduate School Travel Grant

The Graduate Council Budget Advisory Committee oversees distribution of Graduate School Travel Grants for doctoral students. Since applications typically exceed funds, the committee rates applicants on the following criteria:

Graduate Level

• Although all students are eligible, preference is given to doctoral students who are advanced to candidacy (ABD).
• Support amount limitations are $1000 per year for graduate students in good standing.

Travel Purpose

• Travel to conferences where the student's name appears on the program. Applicants must submit a letter from the conference organizers accepting the student's work/proposal, a copy of the conference program or other conference materials containing the student's name as a participant.
• Travel for dissertation research or professional development. Applicants must include a clear, brief explanation of no more than 250 words, detailing the need for and purposes of travel.

Other Selection Criteria

• Priority is given to applicants who have not received travel grants the previous two semesters
• Visibility/significance of conference
• Departmental support, demonstrated through letters of support and/or additional funding

Other Details

• Awards will be coordinated as fully as possible with the graduate student conference, travel or research funding support available through the Graduate Student Organization. Students may apply for both. Amounts received will depend on the funds available and the number of applicants.
• Expenses covered include billed travel or mileage reimbursement, conference registration and lodging. Meals are excluded. Please provide original receipts for all eligible expenses.
• Travel awards granted before travel and in excess of $500 are subject to tax witholdings. Travel awards processed as a reimburesement are not.

 

Application and Award Process

Complete and submit the Graduate School Travel Grant Application as a single pdf to gsfin@binghamton.edu. All applications, which must be typed, require clear explanations of the purpose of travel, a detailed budget or expense account and the signature of a graduate director or dissertation adviser, indicating their endorsement of the proposal.

Travel must be within six months (before or after) of application submission. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on the first Friday of July, November or April. Graduate students are eligible to be funded once per academic year.

The Graduate Council Budget Advisory Committee meets three times per year to review applications. Applicants will be notified of the results of their application following that meeting, approximately 30 days after the submission deadline. Grants will be made, if possible, before student travel takes place. Students may apply for expenses related to travel if travel occurred within the time periods specified above and if original receipts are provided.
