SUNY Dissertation Award

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: SUNY Distinguished PhD Graduate Dissertation Award

On April 15, 2021, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras announced the launch of the SUNY Distinguished PhD Graduate Dissertation Award. This award program honors recent SUNY PhDs who have completed the dissertation. In addition to the formal award, SUNY will provide the winner with a $5,000 prize and up to five finalists a $1,000 prize, to further support their professional goals. Honorees will be recognized formally by the Chancellor. Abstracts of each of the finalist’s work will appear in a commemorative publication produced by SUNY Press and distributed to key constituents across the system. Honorees may use the funds as best supports their professional career development.

All finalists will also be invited to a workshop featuring a SUNY Press facilitated panel discussion on how to turn their dissertation into a book. The panelists at this workshop will include editors and advisory board members from SUNY Press as well as recently published book authors from across the system. Workshop topics will include practical advice on preparing a publishing strategy; creating winning book proposals; and locating the right publisher.

Eligibility

All graduate students who have successfully defended their PhD dissertation and are approved for graduation with the PhD award in academic year 2020-2021 are eligible for nomination (i.e. degree conferral in Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021). For students enrolled in dual-degree programs which include the PhD, individuals are eligible when the campus can certify that all requirements of the PhD have been met.

Nomination Packet

Nomination packages must be submitted electronically to Grechen Mahler, Associate Dean of the Graduate School (gmahler@binghamton.edu) and include the following elements:

1. A 300-500 word abstract in language that can be understood by a non-specialist and suitable for a press release.

2. Three letters of recommendation, evaluating the significance and quality of the nominee’s dissertation work. The nominee’s dissertation supervisor should write one of the letters; the other two should be from researchers or committee members, familiar with the nominee’s work. Letters should be written to a non-specialist audience, avoiding field-specific jargon. If portions of the dissertation have already been published, recommendation letters should indicate the quality of those venues.

3. Full dissertation (pdf version).

4. Nominee’s current resume or CV, including contact information.

Deadline for Nominations

Nominations for the Distinguished PhD Graduate Dissertation Award should be submitted to Gretchen Mahler, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, (gmahler@binghamton.edu) by July 1, 2021. Each campus can submit one nominee to SUNY. The Binghamton nominee will be notified of advancement to SUNY by July 19, 2021
