I-GMAP Conference: "Frontiers of Prevention"

The Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention

Inaugural Conference: "Frontiers of Prevention"
April 13-15, 2018
Binghamton, N.Y.  USA
THE INSTITUTE FOR GENOCIDE AND MASS ATROCITY PREVENTION AT BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE ITS INAUGURAL ANNUAL CONFERENCE. "FRONTIERS OF PREVENTION" WILL TAKE PLACE AT BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY'S DOWNTOWN CAMPUS WITH EVENTS BEGINNING AT 8:00 A.M. ON FRIDAY APRIL 13, AND CONCLUDING ON THE EVENING OF SATURDAY APRIL 14.

The Institute's inaugural conference has two linked objectives. The first is a critical assessment of the contemporary state of a spectrum of genocide and atrocity prevention mechanisms, and an exploration of emergent mechanisms and actors in the global effort at atrocity prevention. The second is to organize an open forum where leading academic researchers with research programs dedicated to prevention can meet with practitioners, both in government and non-governmental service, as a way of fostering critical exchange and finding new grounds for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Conference participants include scholars and prevention-focused activists and practitioners from organizations around the world. Panel themes include: assessing the Responsibility to Protect, new developments in data analysis and risk assessment, emergent prevention mechanisms and actors, and new frontiers in educational policies and commemorative practices.
Frontiers of Prevention is free and open to the public. While no registration is required, for planning purposes those planning to attend are kindly requested to contact Kathy Michaels, Institute Administrator.
Please be sure to visit the Institute's website for complete information on the entire range of the Institute's activities, research initiatives, and special events.

more metaphysics

People are saying that Betsy DeVos struggled to answer basic questions about schools in her 60 Minutes interview. But I thought it was really clear that she just doesn't believe in schools or institutions* at all -- she's an ontological individualist. Sometimes it is worthwhile to humor interviewers by using mass terms, but really schools do not exist.**

(*maybe churches, but probably not)

** she's the Secretary of Education, duh, not the "Secretary of Schools."  because there's no such thing.

I didn't realize till just now that UK university staff have just started a strike:

this also seems like a good occasion to mention that we don't have a contract:

08 March 2018

No workshop today

The workshop on "Attending Conferences and Presenting Papers" has been rescheduled for April 12th, because of the previous anticipation of future snow that we were supposed to have yesterday.

05 March 2018

WOW! No classes on Thursday.

Classes canceled for Thursday, March 8

Classes are canceled for Thursday, March 8.

With an impending snowstorm in the Metro N.Y. region and students attempting to return to campus from winter break, administrators felt it prudent to cancel classes for the safety of the student body.

Residence halls will still open at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, as originally planned, and classes will resume Friday, March 9. Employees are expected to report as usual on Wednesday, but to use their discretion.
